In an ideal world we would not be exposed to these toxins.

In an ideal world our food would nourish us and give us the nutrition we need to replenish our systems.

Since the world is far from ideal, our bodies, to survive, need much higher levels of minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants just to cope with this non-ideal environment. Getting enough from our depleted foods is simply not enough.

Thus to flourish, we must supplement.

Why Does Cranberry Work So Well For Bladder Infections? - Darrell Miller

Cranberry is a fruit native to North America. It typically grows in bogs, and commercial production is mainly performed in Massachusetts and Wisconsin.

For ages, cranberry has been used for the prevention and treatment of urinary tract infections. Research suggests that it prevents bacteria from adhering to host cell surface membranes. It was used by Native Americans to treat ailments of the bladder and kidneys. The cranberry was documented in the 17th century as a treatment for several ailments, including:

* Blood disorders
* Liver problems, vomiting and stomach ailments
* Loss of appetite
* Scurvy
*Cancer

Cranberry was used as an effective treatment for urinary tract infections long before antibiotics were invented. It is still recommended by physicians to be used in conjunction with a prescribed round of antibiotics for treating bladder infections.

Important Facts

Statistically, one in every five women in the United States suffers from bladder infections in her lifetime. Three percent of these women suffer from recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Approximately 11 million women each year receive medications to treat UTIs. Studies show that women with a history of bladder infections can reduce the frequency of those infections by regularly drinking cranberry juice.

There have been no significant reactions discovered between cranberry and prescription drugs. Drinking cranberry juice a minimum of three times per day during treatment of a bladder infection will increase the need to urinate. This helps your body to rid itself of the infection through ingestion and expulsion of fluids.

Pharmacology of Cranberry

The use of cranberry for medicinal purposes has been the subject of many scientific discussions. At first, it was thought that acidification of the urine assisted in creating an antibacterial effect. However, the primary reason that cranberry works so well for treating bladder infections is its prevention of bacterial adhesion to cell walls.
It also prevents adherence by other gram-negative uropathogens that cause infection. Cranberry's ability to inhibit the adherence of bacteria has been shown through in vitro research.

Other Uses

One study showed that the same property in cranberry juice that prevents bladder infections also aids in dental plaque prevention. Additionally, cranberry has been discovered to be a recommended treatment for Candida (yeast) infections.

Further in vitro studies show that cranberry has an inhibiting effect on certain types of fungi. However, there are no human trials that indicate its effectiveness in treating fungal infections when used alone.

Symptoms of a Bladder Infection

The most common symptom of an oncoming bladder infection is feeling a constant, urgent need to empty the bladder. This feeling is present even when there is little or no fluid in the bladder. Other symptoms may include:

* Frequent urination
* Dysuria (burning or painful urination)
* Bladder spasms
* Cloudy urine
* Bloody urine
* Foul-smelling urine
* Mild fever

A bladder infection that has gone untreated for an extended period of time could turn into a kidney infection. This brings with it much more serious symptoms which may include fever, chills and nausea. You may also experience cloudy or bloody urine, painful urination and abdominal pain. A common telltale sign of kidney infection is back pain just above the waist.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is wise to contact your physician. Bladder infection symptoms will not go away by themselves. They will continue to worsen, and your infection will become much more serious. Treatment for bladder infections is quick and easy. The sooner you begin the better.

If you suspect that you are about to experience a bladder infection, begin a regimen of drinking cranberry juice or supplement at least three times a day and make an appointment with your doctor.

Preventing Bladder Infections


There are several precautions you can take to prevent bladder infections. Some may seem obvious or silly, but after your first infection you will think very differently. Some of these precautions include:

* Wipe from front to back after urination or a bowel movement. This prevents the spread of bacteria.

* Go to the bathroom frequently. Holding urine in the bladder for long periods of time invites an infection.

* Keep the genital area clean and dry. Avoid prolonged moisture in the area.

* Avoid frequent bubble baths. They can cause vaginal irritation.

* Try to urinate soon after sexual activity. If lubricants are used, use only those that are water-soluble.

* Underwear with a cotton crotch will aid in infection prevention as well.

Drink a lot of water throughout the day. Also, drink cranberry juice or cranberry supplement to keep the urine acidic. This will prevent natural bacteria from multiplying as frequently, thus avoiding bladder infection.

Perfume - An Aromatic Bliss - Roberto Sedycias


Perfume, an amalgamation of aroma compounds, some vital oils, fixatives and solvents, roots backs to ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt and later by the Romans and Persians. Perfumery, the art of making perfume, found its existence in East Asia too, but mostly it was incensed based.

Tapputi was the first perfume maker whose name was mentioned in cuneiform tablet from the second millennium BC in Mesopotamia. According to recent discoveries, more than 4000 years old perfumes are found in ancient perfume factory that was spread in an area of 4000 square-meter area. Those perfumes were made of herbs, almonds, coriander, bergamot, and other spices, but not flowers.

Avicenna, the Persian doctor and chemist, pioneered the distillation of oils of flowers. He began this process with rose. Prior to that, oils, petals and crushed herbs were blended to make perfumes. Then the art of making perfume reached Europe in 14th century and later Hungarians launched the modern perfume, a mixture of oils in alcohol solution, in 1370. In 16th century, this proliferated art of Italy was taken to France and then it became the European center of perfume and cosmetic manufacture. With this impact, cultivation of flowers became a flourishing industry in the south of France. During the Renaissance period, perfumed were meant for royal class only. Around 18th century, perfume industry boomed like anything, since the cultivation of aromatic plants were increased to provide more and more raw material.

A perfume can be described on the basis of its concentration level, the family it belongs to and the notes of scents it spreads. Perfume oil has to be diluted with a solvent, as undiluted oils are highly concentrated and can cause allergies. Ethanol or a mixture of ethanol and water are the most common diluting agents for perfumes. Neutral smelling lipids like jojoba, fractionated coconut oil or wax are the best ways to dilute perfume oils. The intensity and endurance of a perfume depends on the amount of concentrates it contains.

According to traditional and modern classification, perfumes consist of number of categories like single floral, floral bouquet, ambery, woody, leathery, bright floral, green, oceanic/ozone, citrus, etc. Each category is well-known for its own distinctiveness. Plants are the chief source of aromatics and each part of plant is responsible for a specific aromatic compound. Apart from plants, animals like Ambergris, Civet, Musk and Honeycomb are also great sources of aromatic compounds. Besides these, other natural sources are Lichens and Seaweed. But modern perfumes contain odorants which are not naturally available; rather they are synthetic odorants like Calon.

The synthetic odorants are organically synthesized and then purified before the composition of perfume. In case of natural sources, odorants are obtained by dissolving the raw material in a solvent to obtain the desired aromatic compounds. On the other hand, the method of heating the raw material and then condensed to distill aromatic vapors is called distillation. It can be either steam distillation or dry distillation. Aromatic oils can also be collected through expression that is compression of the raw material. The extracted compounds are essential oils which are used to compose perfumes.

In the whole process the role of perfumer is very important, as he formulates the perfume according to the need and mood of the customer or his employer, keeping in mind the price of the perfume oil concentrates. Then the perfume is formulated to evoke the desired feelings in those who smell it. Perfumes should be properly stored also to keep their aromas intact. They should not be exposed to heat and light. They can be kept in light tight aluminium bottle or in their original packing.

Some may have a hard time in accepting this. Well, that's okay, but rather than dismiss it, I ask you to consider looking into the ways in which the deception works and I'll bet you'll come to the same conclusions as me.

Let's look at some general underlying principles. Take the case of the latter two I mentioned above. The medical / pharmaceutical establishment and the food industry.

The way the deception works

As I have said before, any solutions of a nutritional kind is carefully kept under wraps by the pharmaceutical companies and the government, who heavily sponsor the media and pay them off not to publicise. Over the years, dedicated and brilliant people of a humanitarian nature who have come up with nutritional methods for cures of illnesses have been deliberately ignored, quashed or even ridiculed. Even when they had come up with genuinely successful methods.

In other words, the pharmaceutical companies and their influence over the medical establishment, together with the government has become the order of the day. This, indeed, quite simply is a case of putting profits before the welfare concern of the people, which of course, is not acceptable. It is indeed an example of how we are not living in a democracy.

And that's not all...

-This corporate soulless greed machine method of control and suppression is also demonstrated in the food industry. A a matter of fact, both pharmaceuticals and food products undergo the same pattern when it comes to making decisions over what should go on to the market. It goes like this.

Approval bodies such as the FDA (The Food and Drug administration), the United States set up, comprise a group of individuals who decide what food and drugs are safe to go on the market. Many of these individuals have ties with the very pharmaceutical or food companies they are judging! So any real decision-making made from these people will be most likely in favour of the pharmaceutical or food companies.

Evidence has been shown time and time again that these individuals have been biased. It has also been shown that some of those who were not tied to companies during the time of the decision-making were later on. For example, some individuals who had been on the FDA later became appointed on the board of directors of the pharmaceutical companies.

-This has introduced a level of corruption that has allowed many harmful foods and drugs to go on the market.

Well-documented cases where there have been health-damaging side effects from harmful food and drugs have been given little or no publicity.

Junk food and potentially harmful foods have found their way on to the shelves of supermarkets, care of slick advertising and marketing. There is much trickery and deception involved in this.

Good food can give much information on the subject of junk food.

The main thing for now is to get smart and realise there is a game going on played by the people mentioned in the point who obviously don't really care about your health. Good food will allow you to profoundly realise that the above authorities have a power and political game going on and don't have your best health interests at heart: Knowing what to look for and how to distinguish good from bad nutrition is the key.

The Lazy Person's Guide To Getting Fit On Holiday




So, you've made it. You're finally on holiday!

(Yeah, I know, you're still at the office slaving away at your desk but bear with me, I'm painting a picture here!)

After all those weeks of cutting calories, depriving yourself of treats and regularly thrashing yourself about in the gym (You know, the usual pre-holiday fitness panic) you're finally able to get your kit off, soak up some rays and chill out on the beach.

After all, idleness and holidays go hand in hand don't they?

Or do they? Or, more to the point, should they?

It may or may not surprise to you to find out that, on average, holiday makers put on around 5-7lbs in weight during their two weeks away from home, a figure (excuse the pun) only normally beaten by Christmas!

Now, 7lbs may not sound like a lot but in reality it represents some 24,500 extra calories stored either through reduced activity or excess food consumption.

Just to clarify, that's the equivalent of about 10 days worth of calories above and beyond those needed to maintain your weight during your holiday. And guess what?

Nearly all of this is fat!!

So maybe a week of sun, sea and sloth isn't such a great idea after all. Not unless you actually enjoy laying down lard!

The funny thing is, it's so easy to avoid piling on the holiday pounds.

In fact, many people find that they actually come back from their holidays leaner, more toned and far healthier than when they went away just by taking advantage of the opportunity to be more active and try new, healthier foods.

I know what you're thinking "I'm on holiday to enjoy myself and relax NOT to put myself through some harsh diet and thrash myself everyday" and you're right, a holiday should offer the chance to rejuvenate and replenish your tired body.

That's exactly why you should consider being more active during your break.

You see, contrary to popular belief, total bed-rest (or sunbed rest) is actually BAD for you.

Lazing your days away leads to muscle wasting, reduced metabolism, increased fat storage and increased lethargy.

This is why we're often more tired upon return from our hols than before we went away, we're simply allowing our bodies to degrade through immobility.

As if we're not already immobile enough in our day-to-day lives!

Of course, this can easily be avoided by incorporating a little and often approach to activity during your holiday. Just follow the simple tips laid out below and you may even come back in better shape than when you started your hols.

1. Take a walk, run or go for a swim before breakfast. This is a great way to fire up your metabolism and burn off some extra calories before you put more food into your body, and a great opportunity to get your towel on a sunbed before anyone else!

2. Spend at least 10 mins out of every hour on your feet Come on, 10 minutes is hardly a hardship and you can use this time to walk along the beach and even-up your tan in those hard to reach bits or even to check out the talent further up the beach!

3. Spend at least 10 mins out of every hour in the water. Swim, snorkel, surf, kayak, paddle or whatever takes your fancy. Just get in the water and move!

I'm sensing some resistance. Still too much effort?

Well, for those of you determined to travel the world, meet interesting people and wave at them from the comfort of your sunbed (you lazy lot!) all's not lost. There may still be a way of keeping you from piling on the pounds.

Isometric contractions are the ideal lazy-persons workout as they require no movement. Not one bit.

Now I've got your attention haven't I?

To perform isometrics simply contract the target muscles between 75-100% of their maximum effort and hold this contraction for 20-30 seconds before relaxing and choosing another target.

For the chest: Push the palms of your hands together in a prayer-type position. Now push, crush and push some more with all your might.

For the shoulders: Clasp your hands together and attempt to pull them apart as hard as you can

For your abdominals: Lie on your back, knees bent and hand on thighs. With arms outstretched and elbows locked, attempt a crunch type movement (Against your locked arms you won't be able to get up).

For your thighs: Straighten your legs and contract and squeeze as hard as you can. Easy!

For your inner thighs: Legs straight and ankles together try to push each ankle through the other one (You may want to place a towel between your ankles). A similar action can be done with the knees.

For your hips: Cross your legs and feet and attempt to pull the feet apart.

There you have it. The ultimate lazy-persons workout with not a weight, band or exercise gizmo in sight.

But don't let its simplicity fool you, this workout can be amazingly effective at increasing muscular tone and strength Working this way you can perform an almost endless circuit of exercises as you work around the body without ever getting off of your sunbed. Not bad huh?

Seriously though, movement is where it's at. The body is quite simply a movement machine. It likes it, wants it and needs it to function optimally, and by incorporating movement into your holiday you'll look and feel far better because of it.

I'm not suggesting that your holiday has to be all action and adventure from start to finish or that fitness should dominate your thoughts in any way, simply that you take a little time every day to look after your body and give it what it needs.

After all, what's the point of half killing yourself to get in shape prior to your hols if you're going to trash it all and look fat and unfit on your return?

TRANS FATTY ACIDS AND YOUR HEALTH

Trans fatty acids, or trans fats, are created when food manufacturers turn vegetable oil into solid fat, like shortening and hard margarine. This process increases the shelf life of foods, including the potato chips, cookies, and fried food that Americans consume every day. Trans fat behaves like saturated fat, clogging arteries and increasing LDL-C (bad cholesterol) levels. Trans fat may also reduce HDL (good cholesterol levels). Elevated LDL-C increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease. The health risks posed by this dangerous fat have prompted the FDA to require that U.S. food manufacturers list trans fat amounts on all nutritional labels by 2006.


Are All Fats the Same?

Simply put: No. Fat is a major source of energy for the body and aids in the absorption of vitamins A, D, E, and K and carotenoids. Both animal- and plant-derived food products contain fat, and when eaten in moderation, fat is important for proper growth, development, and maintenance of good health. As a food ingredient, fat provides taste, consistency, and stability and helps you feel full. In addition, parents should be aware that fats are an especially important source of calories and nutrients for infants and toddlers (up to 2 years of age), who have the highest energy needs per unit of body weight of any age group.

While unsaturated fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated) are beneficial when consumed in moderation, saturated and trans fats are not. Saturated fat and trans fat raise LDL cholesterol levels in the blood. Dietary cholesterol also contributes to heart disease. Therefore, it is advisable to choose foods low in saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol as part of a healthful diet.
What Can You Do About Saturated Fat, Trans Fat, and Cholesterol?

When comparing foods, look at the Nutrition Facts panel, and choose the food with the lower amounts of saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol. Health experts recommend that you keep your intake of saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol as low as possible while consuming a nutritionally adequate diet. However, these experts recognize that eliminating these three components entirely from your diet is not practical because they are unavoidable in ordinary diets.

GLYCEMIC INDEX: WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU


The glycemic index is a way of measuring the rate at which carbohydrates are broken down and appear in the blood as simple sugars. Those foods that result in a rapid rise in blood sugar have a high-glycemic index. Carbohydrates that are broken down slowly and cause only a moderate increase in blood sugar have a low-glycemic index. Some carbohydrates fall in between.

High-glycemic foods provide quick energy, but it is usually short lived and hunger soon returns. Low-glycemic foods provide greater satiety and sustained energy, which makes eating less and losing weight easier.

High-glycemic diets also have been linked to obesity, type II diabetes, insulin resistance, and heart disease. Virtually all convenience foods and many meal replacement and diet products on the market today are unfortunately, high glycemic.3

Exercise Could Slow Aging Of Body - Dr. Jim Brassard Ph.D/Ma.D.Sc.

Physically active people have cells that look younger on a molecular level than those of couch potatoes, according to new research that offers a fundamental new clue into how exercise may help stave off aging.
The study, involving more than 2,400 British twins, found for the first time that exercise appears to slow the shriveling of the protective tips on bundles of genes inside cells, perhaps keeping frailty at bay.

These data suggest that the act of exercising may actually protect the body against the aging process," said Tim D. Spector, a professor of genetic epidemiology at King's College in London who led the study, published yesterday in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Previous research has shown that being physically active reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer and other diseases, potentially extending longevity. In the hopes of helping explain how, Spector and his colleagues examined structures known as telomeres inside cells.
Telomeres cap the ends of chromosomes, the structures that carry genes. Every time a cell divides, the telomeres get shorter. When the telomeres get too short, the cell can no longer divide. Scientists believe that aging occurs as more and more cells reach the end of their telomeres and die -- muscles weaken, skin wrinkles, eyesight and hearing fade, organs fail, and thinking clouds.

Spector and his colleagues analyzed the telomeres from white blood cells collected from 2,401 twins participating in a long-term health study, examining whether there was a relationship between the subjects' telomere length and how much exercise they got in their spare time over a 10-year period.

"We're using telomere length as a marker of our rate of biological aging," Spector said.

The length of the twins' telomeres was directly related to their activity levels, the researchers found. People who did a moderate amount of exercise -- about 100 minutes a week of activity such as tennis, swimming or running -- had telomeres that on average looked like those of someone about five or six years younger than those who did the least -- about 16 minutes a week. Those who did the most -- doing about three hours a week of moderate to vigorous activity-- had telomeres that appeared to be about nine years younger than those who did the least.

"There was a gradient," Spector said. "As the amount of exercise increased, the telomere length increased."

Glaucoma is a disease of the major nerve of vision, called the optic nerve. The optic nerve receives light from the retina and transmits impulses to the brain that we perceive as vision. Glaucoma is characterized by a particular pattern of progressive damage to the optic nerve that generally begins with a subtle loss of side vision (peripheral vision).

Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the passages that allow fluid in the eye to drain become clogged or blocked. This results in the amount of fluid in the eye building up and causing increased pressure inside the eye. This increased pressure damages the optic nerve which connects the eye to the brain. The optic nerve is the main carrier of vision information to the brain. Damage to it results in less information sent to the brain and a loss of vision.

New eye drops will continue to become available for the treatment of glaucoma. Some drops will be new classes of agents. Other drops will combine some already existing agents into one bottle to achieve an additive effect and to make it easier and cheaper for patients to take their medication.

Glaucoma is a condition in which the pressure inside the eye is raised. The increase in pressure usually happens when fluid (the aqueous humor) in the front part of the eye (the anterior chamber) doesn't drain away properly. Normally, the amount of fluid produced is balanced by the amount draining away, so the pressure in the front part of the eye stays constant.

Glaucoma refers to certain eye diseases that affect the optic nerve and cause vision loss. Most, but not all, of these diseases typically produce elevated pressure inside the eye, called intraocular pressure (IOP). Normal IOP is measured in millimeters of mercury and can range from 10-21 mm Hg. An elevated IOP is the most important risk factor for the development of glaucoma.

The exact causes of optic nerve damage from glaucoma is not fully understood, but involves mechanical compression and/or decreased blood flow of the optic nerve. Although high eye pressure sometimes leads to glaucoma, many people can also develop glaucoma with "normal" eye pressure.

Glaucoma is caused by a number of different eye diseases which in most cases produce increased pressure within the eye. This elevated pressure is caused by a backup of fluid in the eye. Over time, it causes damage to the optic nerve. Through early detection, diagnosis and treatment, you and your doctor can help to preserve your vision.

Glaucoma is actually a group of eye diseases that lead to damage of the optic nerve (the bundle of nerve fibers that carries information from the eye to the brain), which can then lead to vision loss and the possibility of blindness. Optic nerve damage usually occurs in the presence of high intraocular pressure; however, it can occur with normal or even below-normal eye pressure.

The eyes of a person with glaucoma are damaged when fluid builds up and increases pressure inside the eye. Glaucoma symptoms vary, but can include peripheral vision loss, sudden blurring of vision, and eye pain. In most cases, however, glaucoma displays no noticeable symptoms before it takes away the vision of its victim. Thankfully, with proper preventative eye care, it is possible to keep glaucoma from affecting your life.

Compounds in garlic inhibit key enzymes that generate inflammation in your body. By reducing inflammation, garlic may help to prevent severe asthma attacks and reduce the pain associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Garlic and garlic-derived supplements can help reduce the risk of heart disease in several important ways. Garlic lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, lessens destructive oxidation and decreases the formation of blood clots. It also slows hardening of arteries (atherosclerosis) and helps maintain their elasticity. Immediately after quitting:

Develop a clean, fresh, nonsmoking environment around yourself - at work and at home. Buy yourself flowers - you may be surprised how much you can enjoy their scent now.

The first few days after you quit, spend as much free time as possible in places where smoking isn't allowed, such as libraries, museums, theaters, department stores, and churches.

Drink large quantities of water and fruit juice (but avoid sodas that contain caffeine).

Try to avoid alcohol, coffee, and other beverages that you associate with cigarette smoking.

If you miss the sensation of having a cigarette in your hand, play with something else - a pencil, a paper clip, a marble.

If you miss having something in your mouth, try toothpicks or a fake cigarette.


Avoid temptation:

Instead of smoking after meals, get up from the table and brush your teeth or go for a walk.

If you always smoke while driving, listen to a particularly interesting radio program or your favorite music, or take public transportation for a while, if you can.

For the first one to three weeks, avoid situations you strongly associate with the pleasurable aspects of smoking, such as watching your favorite TV program, sitting in your favorite chair, or having a cocktail before dinner.

The best prevention is protecting your body through a healthy diet rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants can be found in everyday foods that you already eat and are also available in supplements.

What are antioxidants?
Antioxidants are compounds that destroy free radicals in your body that are created by oxidation. The use of oxygen in cells leaves toxic by-products called free radicals. Achieving weight loss doesn't have to be that difficult. No one likes the word "diet". Just hearing that one little dreaded word, can make you stop before you even start. We shall now discuss some proven ways in which you can lose weight with a minimum of effort.

1. Avoid Starving Yourself
The answer to losing weight is not to diet, and does not involve starving yourself. This might sound odd, but it's correct. Consuming too little is the main reason for the failure of most people in their goals for weight loss. You may seem content and think that you are losing unwanted flab on your belly and thighs by skipping those meals. This feeling will soon depart though. Your body cannot bear receiving inadequate food to create the energy needed for your daily activities. Eventually your body concludes that it is not receiving enough energy for survival. Your body will interpret this as a threat and will attempt to maintain the most fat that it can. This occurs because this behaviour has evolved over thousands of years of human existence, specifically to help keep humans alive. People will often attempt to lose weight by making huge cuts in their calorie intake. Doing this will only force your body to do the opposite of what you intend. I recommend cutting only a maximum of 500 calories a day from your diet.

2. Eat Several Small Meals A Day
Consuming several mini-meals throughout the day will actually speed up your metabolism, raise your energy level, and burn off more fat. It is better to eat five or six smaller meals throughout the day instead of having three larger meals. By doing this, your body's metabolism will stay up during the entire day. You can prevent over-eating by eating more frequently, in smaller servings. Try to eat every 3 hours.

3. Eat A Quality Breakfast
Breakfast is considered the most crucial meal of the day. Therefore, everyone should eat a good breakfast. The last time you had something to eat would have been during dinner the night before, which would be as much as 12 hours earlier. Your energy level will be low, and your body will tell you that you should eat. Eating a substantial breakfast will give your body the energy it needs to successfully start the day. Ideally, breakfast should be your biggest meal and dinner your smallest. Unfortunately, most people eat the reverse of this: a small breakfast followed by a larger lunch and finished off by an enormous dinner. A large breakfast isn't typically stored as fat because when your body has been fasting all night, it will turn this food directly into energy. Calories consumed during a large evening meal are far more likely to be stored as fat. This is because fewer calories are burned at night due to a lower activity level, and your metabolism is at its slowest when you sleep. If you fill up at the end of the day, your body will convert excess calories, and store them as fat.

4. Drink Plenty Of Water
Most of us don't drink the 8 glasses of water a day that we are supposed to. Adequate water intake helps promote healthy cell function, as well as a fast metabolism that burns fat. Is it common for you to awaken in the morning feeling so exhausted, as if you were experiencing a hangover? Dehydration is the usual cause. Symptoms of dehydration include headache, fatigue and tiredness. The most abundant nutrient in the human body is water. Water makes up about 60% to 70% of your body. 5. Too Much Sugar Is A Bad Thing

Have you ever asked the question "Can I lose weight from hula hooping?", if you find yourself asking that question, then good news. I have some great tips here to get you started on how to include the hula hoop into your fitness workout.

Let us first look at how to select a suitable hula hoop to use in your workout. Size does matter, choose the correct sized hoop. Forget those that you find in Toys R Us, they are kid sized hoops, unless of course you are kid sized. So, get an adult sized hoop, if you are a beginner to hooping getting the wrong sized hoop will make it harder for you to pick up hooping.

As a general guide, with the hoop placed upright on the floor in front of you, the top of the hoop should reach your chest. Of course the size of your waist has to be taken into account. So the bigger you are, the bigger the hoop has to be. The speed of rotation is inversely proportionate to the size of the hoop. Bigger hoops will rotate slower and smaller hoops faster. Bigger hoops that rotate slower will make it easier for you to learn hooping initially. Faster rotating smaller hoops are great for doing tricks with and harder to master, but are excellent of exercise.

Try to strike a balance on the rotation speed and difficulty level of the hoop that you pick. Try them out in the store, get a feel of the rotation speed and how hard it is to use. You wouldn't want to get something that rotates slow and doesn't provide a good enough workout or something so fast that you ended up giving up hooping because it is too hard.

To get you started on your very first hoop workout, try this:

1. stand with one foot in front of the other
2. Hold the hoop against your back, slightly above your waist
3. Push the hoop around your waist
4. Shift your weight back and forth on your feet

Try to find the momentum of the hoop's rotation in relation to your body movements. You might find yourself trying to move your hips in a circle to follow the hoop, it is easier if you shift your weight back and forth. As for which way to rotate the hoop, try out both ways, you will instinctively find out which way is more comfortable for you.

7 Steps To Stay Young - Serj

When we were 16 years old we could not help but to want to get older so we could get our own place; our own job; our own car; and the list goes on. Now that we have all of those things we look back and wish we could have the bodies that we had when we were 16. Ironic as that is you are not the only one that feels that way and thus this list is created. Although we can not lead you to believe that you will look 16 again and yet if you follow these practical steps they will delay you from looking or feeling 100.


1. Quit Smoking

It can not be overemphasized how important this step is. If you were to do one thing that drastically impacted how your physical body looks 5 years from now then at the very least quit smoking. Quitting smoking is perhaps one of the most difficult things to do, I know, I went through it myself. What helped me finally quit was that I loved doing something more than smoking and I asked my spouse if she would allow me to do it if I could quit smoking and so she agreed. She signed up for this thing and was the only one who knew the password for it. I then told her that if I smoked she should take this thing away from me. This worked, I haven't touched a cigarette since, I just quit "cold turkey." This may or may not work for you. If you are interested in quitting smoking there are several resources available to help you quit.


2. Quit Doing Drugs

When we talk about quitting to use drugs, we are not referring to the illegal drugs like marijuana, methamphetamine, heroin, etc. everyone knows not to use those. When we say quit using drugs then we are talking about your over the counter drugs. Drugs like your painkillers, sleep aids, and antacids are sometimes necessary however if they are taken on a daily basis they will cause you to deteriorate. If the pain is insignificant try skipping that pain pill. If you can avoid taking the sleeping pill, avoid it. The chemicals that are in those pills destroy your body over time. Often the reason for the pain or the inability to sleep is able to be resolved in a better alternative method. A common over the counter drug is alcohol. Although we do not say that alcohol is bad, in fact some research proves that wine can be healthy for you if it is done in moderation. Alcohol in excessive amount can be literally devastating to a human body yet in moderation it should not cause much of a negative effect or may even be helpful.


3. Exercise

Exercise has an amazing effect on your body. The very first reason to exercise is that it rebuilds your muscles. Your body is very smart. It creates what you use and gets rid of what you don't use. Therefore if you spend all of your time sitting in from of the TV or computer then you use very little of your muscles and so the body starts deteriorating your muscles because it does not need them. When you are working out you start rebuilding your muscles. This is also true for other organs such as your lungs when you engage in cardiovascular activity. Second thing that working out does is it gets rid of the unnecessary and sometimes bad elements that are in your body. By sweating your body is able to "exhale" all of the negative elements that are inside of you. This also includes your body converting your stored fat into energy thus getting rid of those "love handles." The third thing that is a by-product of exercise is the automatic confidence that is built within yourself.


4. Eat healthy

Eating healthy is along the same lines as exercise. Perhaps one of the most common reasons that I hear people eat unhealthy foods is the cost of purchasing good food. My question to you then is if your health is unimportant enough that you are willing to intake foods that are harmful for you then what is? Always opt for foods that are organic. Non-organic foods are supplemented by chemicals that the scientific community of the whole world is concluding as this being the biggest cause of cancer. We ask why is cancer so prevalent now but was not so much just 50 years ago...it is because of our daily food. I will implore you to please eat organic food whenever possible. Also buy a water filter that filters your drinking water. Often such a filter costs less than $50 and lasts several months and yet it gets rid of all the chlorine and other harmful chemicals that are in your tap water. If there is one change that you make that perhaps causes the most impact for your health it would be to get a water filter. A report by the U.S. Cancer Institute states that "Drinking chlorinated water may as much as double the risk of bladder cancer." Now isn't a $50 investment insignificant when you compare it to how much of a benefit is provided to you and your family?


5. Stop tanning or at least use sun screen

The American Academy of Dermatology states that without protection from the sun’s rays, just a few minutes of exposure each day over the years can cause noticeable changes to the skin. Freckles, age spots, spider veins on the face, rough and leathery skin, fine wrinkles that disappear when stretched, loose skin, a blotchy complexion, actinic keratoses (thick wart-like, rough, reddish patches of skin), and skin cancer can all be traced to sun exposure. Any tanning booth usage will cause acceleration of skin aging as well. Those people who tan on a regular basis might have some of the same skin aging in their 20's that would normally show up in a person 50 years old or older. You can protect yourself by applying sun block that guarantees protection from ultra-violet rays before doing any activity that involves being exposed to the sun for longer than a few minutes.


6. Take Vitamins and Supplements

Vitamins, Green Teas, Fish Oils all of these products should be taken through out our whole life. It is amazing how well these supplements help to protect our bodily functions such as the immune system, eyesight, hearing, touch, taste, and sharp brain activity are all maintained and enhanced by providing the body with the necessary nutrients it needs to function correctly. In our technologically advanced civilization scientific breakthroughs are occurring on a daily basis, it seems. One that you may have likely used yourself is some form of an anti-aging cream. whether it is exfoliating, rejuvenating or any of the the other creams designed for epidermal treatment. One that is most recently a phenomenon is the discovery of use of human growth hormones for treating aging issues. It shows tremendous possibilities, especially for those who are 40 years old and older. These products can effect you in countless ways so it is to your benefit to further research them and the possibilities that they can have for you.

Staying young is the reality that most people hope for and there are some things that you can do to help you with that. Yet the bottom line is that you should enjoy life while you are living it. If we were determined to live making sure that we looked as young as possible for as long as possible, we would stay inside all of the time, we would constantly be covered in some kinds of creams and constantly watching what we do and what we eat. How Much Protein Should You Eat Every Day?

Everyone knows that protein is an essential part of your daily diet, and meeting a minimum protein level throughout the day is vital for having the energy you need as the day rolls on. Some people, however, are unaware of the fact that there is also such thing as having too much protein in your diet, because your body doesn't know what to do with excess protein and this can cause more harm than good. Having excess protein in your diet can cause just as many harmful effects for your health as not getting enough protein can. If you are increasing your protein intake but your calorie intake or exercise habit is not increasing along with it, you can actually put your body through more stress than it needs or than it can handle for that matter.

Your body requires protein on a daily basis in order to repair and build your muscles along with other vital body tissues. Protein allows your body to create the hormones that it needs for optimum health, and to make the enzymes that are needed for metabolic and digestive processes. If you do not consume enough protein on a daily basis, your body may turn to your muscle instead, breaking it down to find the energy it needs.

Proteins are comprised of amino acids, which are essentially building blocks, and there are somewhere around twenty different amino acids, some of which are actually created by your body. There are nine different amino acids, however, that cannot be synthesized by the body, and these are known as essential amino acids. The only way to get these essential amino acids is by eating whole foods that contain them. It is vital that you eat a variety of different protein foods every single day so that your body can get all of the essential amino acids that it needs.


There are a number of excellent whole food sources of protein that offer all nine of the essential amino acids, including meat, turkey, fish, eggs, chicken, cheese, milk, soy and yogurt. You can also find some, but not all, of the nine essential amino acids in plant food sources such as beans and peas and other legumes, nuts, peanut butter and some seeds. If you are a vegetarian, then it is vital that you find the right balance of whole food plant sources including vegetables, legumes, seeds, nuts and grains in order to get all of the essential amino acids that you need.

The amount of protein that you need is dependent upon your age, the size of your body, and how active you tend to be, or how much energy you burn throughout an average day. Most teenagers, for example, need between 40 and 50 grams of protein per day. The best way to get an estimate of how much protein you need is to take your weight and multiply it by about 0.40, and you will have the number of grams of protein that you need for a day. So if you weigh 150lbs for example, and you multiply that by 0.40, you will need 60 grams of protein every day for optimum health. This is just an estimate however, and there are a number of characteristics that will impact this number, such as whether or not you are an athlete or play sports.

Many of the whole food sources of protein are excellent at delivering the protein that you need. For example, fish, beef, chicken and shrimp can provide as many as 21 grams of protein per 3 oz serving. A single cup of yogurt can provide 11 grams of protein, and cooked lentils and tofu can provide 9 grams of protein with only a half cup of food. Other excellent sources for protein include bulgur, kashi, oats, millet, cooked egg, hummus, soy milk, cooked beans, cheese and cow's milk. There are a number of different protein supplements that come in the form of bars, powders and shakes. Usually though, most people get their much needed protein, rendering these supplements unnecessary in most cases. But if you need to put more protein into your diet, make sure your protein supplement contains several forms of protein (not just whey protein) AND the protein includes an enzyme additive for protein digestion. This will ensure your body can digest the protein and you acheive maximum benefits from taking the supplement.

I understand the problem when someone says they burned their warm market and have no where else to turn for I've been there and done it. I made a list of 200 names (actually more) and called all of them followed the directions of my upline and leaders and burned through my entire list without having any success. This appears to be the common situation that is found in network marketing. However, it certainly does not need to be this way. You can achieve MLM sucess with the RIGHT MLM training.

When people reach this point in their warm market, they turn to extreme measures. They seem to try to buy leads, go to free lead generator websites and do cold calling. I have news for you - these never work and you are wasting your time and money on them. After a while most will quit the business because their confidence has already been reduced during their negative reaction of their warm market.

There is only one way to generate leads once you have burned your warm market and that is to turn to the internet to generate leads. But how? It is simplier than you think.

Now, I will not be popular with most MLM companies when I ask you to turn to the internet for most MLM companies have a tendency to ONLY EMPHASIZE warm market and refuse to understand any other method. Well, I have news for you....that sucks because that method is broken.

There is a CORRECT method of generating leads through the internet and it is important for you to find it. Thank God for MLM Outlaws for they are the best which is on the internet to help youi in this matter.

Blogging, writing articles, doing videos on youtube and other outlets are important in generating leads for your MLM company but I suggest you learn how to do these things well though you feel you cannot. How To Instantly Lose 1-2 Inches Off Your Waist Line - Ed Scow

No, I'm sorry my subject line has nothing to do with magic fat burning pills or the latest gadget found on late-night infomercials.

But that is the most common question I get, not only from clients but from everyday people who have found out I'm a personal trainer.

"How do I get rid of this...quickly?" It's usually asked while grabbing a hold of a little goo sitting on the tummy.

The proper answer is that it takes exercise and better eating habits, but there is a quicker answer that may surprise you.

All you have to do is learn to control your abdominal, low back and butt muscles and you will instantly lose a couple inches off your stomach.

It's not really magic, it's just learning to use proper posture while sitting and standing.

Today's population has horrible posture. I see it everyday, not only in my training studio and massage clients, but just from "people watching".

Everybody is slouching with rounded shoulders, flat butts or they let their gut hang out which gives them a big curve in their lower back.

That's why I am constantly telling my training clients to keep their tummies tight while doing their workouts.

The ladies in my boot camps can attest to this. I'm constantly harping on them to keep their tummies tight.

I can tell when they are and when they aren't, because their stomachs will shrink by a couple inches when they keep their stomachs tight and controlled.

It's probably the easiest thing you can do, right now, to make your stomach shrink. Not only that, but your body will feel better.

When you have poor posture, or let your stomach muscles get too relaxed, your body has to work harder to keep you upright. That means you'll get tired easily.

Not only that, but you won't perform as well in your day-to-day tasks. All because of poor posture.

So here's what you can do right now, while reading this, to help remedy the situation.

Sit up straight, or stand up straight. Lift your chin up so you're looking straight ahead.

Pull your shoulders back by squeezing your shoulder blades together. Lift your chest up and relax your shoulders so you're not all hunched up.

Now contract your abs like someone is going to punch you in the gut. Not too hard, just enough that you know they're tight.

Now, if you're someone who lets their gut hang out, creating a nasty curve in your lower back, I want you to tighten your glutes (butt) and "tuck your tail under" so that your stomach comes back and that curve in your low back goes back to normal.

If you've done this right, you should look like a soldier standing at attention.

There's a reason soldiers look so fit and intimidating when they're standing at attention. They're using perfect posture (plus they're in damn good shape). They're standing upright without any hunches and are not letting their guts hang out.

Practice this routine multiple times per day until it becomes routine.

Not only that, but when you're exercising, concentrate on keeping your stomach tight. You will be amazed at the results you see in the mirror. Actually, that's another good tip. Practice this in front of a mirror.

You, and the people around you, will think that you have lost 10 pounds.

Get A Grip On Fatty Acids - Lisa Nelson

Unless you have been living under a rock, you have probably heard the term fatty acids. But, do you understand what they are and how the right ratio will improve your heart health? I intend to clear up the confusion.

There are numerous types of fatty acids. I am focusing on omega 3 and omega 6.

Unsaturated Fats

Omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are both unsaturated fats. To improve cholesterol levels, you want to replace the saturated fats (i.e. lard, shortening, ice cream, cheese) in your diet with unsaturated fats.

What does "omega" mean?

Most of you are familiar with the saying "alpha to omega", in other words, beginning to end. The "omega" indicates which carbon has the first double bond on the carbon chain when you start counting from the omega end. For omega 3, the first double bond is on the third carbon from the omega end of the carbon chain. I know you were wanting to review a little biochemistry today!

Essential Fatty Acids

Omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are also essential fatty acids.

Essential fatty acids are necessary for cardiovascular health, but our body cannot synthesize them. You can only obtain essential fatty acids through the foods you eat.

Omega 3 (Linolenic Acid)

To keep things simple, I am going to use the acronyms ALA, EPA, and DHA. These are all types of omega 3 fatty acids. If we consume a food containing the omega 3 fatty acid ALA, our body will convert it to EPA and DHA. Studies have shown a link between EPA, DHA, and heart disease. More studies are needed to understand ALA's relationship.

Sources:

Oils - Canola oil, Soybean oil, Flaxseed oil (good source of ALA)

Seeds and nuts - flaxseeds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, Brazil nuts, sesame seeds

Vegetables - avocados, some dark leafy green vegetables (kale, spinach, mustard greens, collards)

Fish (good source of EPA and DHA) - salmon, mackerel, sardines, anchovies, albacore tuna, lake trout, herring

Omega 6 (Linoleic Acid)

I am going to throw in more acronym's - GLA and AA - omega 6 fatty acids. Linoleic acid is converted to GLA and on into AA by the body. Researchers are finding indications of a link between GLA and EPA, in relation to heart health and reduced blood pressure. High intake of sugars, alcohol, trans fats, and various other factors can inhibit the conversion from linoleic acid to GLA.

Sources:

Oils - Sunflower oil, corn oil, safflower oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil, flaxseed oil

Seeds and nuts - flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, pistachio nuts, sunflower seeds, pine nuts

Meat - chicken, beef

For optimum heart health, the ratio between omega 6 fatty acids and omega 3 should be between 1:1 and 4:1. A practical example of what a 1:1 ratio means, for every 3 ounces of beef you eat, you would need to eat 3 ounces of tuna (I do not mean in the same meal!). The ratio for the typical American diet is 11:1 to 30:1. This poor ratio is linked with heart disease, among several other health issues.

Bottom Line:

For heart health, increase your intake of foods containing omega-3 fatty acids, while cutting back on omega-6 fatty acid sources. For example, switch from corn oil to canola oil, increase the number of meals you eat that contain fish each week, and grab walnuts instead of pistachios.

Losing weight is all about burning more calories than you consume and when you are not the one preparing the meal, you are often eating higher amounts of calories than you thought would be in a given serving. In order to stay strict with those calories, there are a few tricks to eating out and losing weight.

* Choosing a salad. The salad section of a menu can seem like the safest place to start. But, salads in a restaurant setting are not like the salads you prepare at home. * Eating from the kids menu. The kids menu offers smaller versions of the adult menu. But, these choices are often larger than a traditional portion you would serve yourself at home. Kids menu options are also most often deep fried and full of the wrong kinds of fats. Staying away from the kids menu is a great choice whenever dining out and trying to lose weight.

* Choosing chicken. Chicken is a safe choice in many restaurants as long as two simple rules are followed. Do not choose the battered version and do not eat the entire serving. A serving of chicken should only be the size of a deck of cards. This can be added to the garden salad to make for a light and healthy salad while dining in a restaurant.

* Flavored tea. Many restaurants are now serving flavored teas as a part of their menus. These teas can be appealing and there are just tea, right? Wrong. Many of the mango, raspberry and strawberry teas are flavored with sugared syrups and can contain more calories than a can of sugared soda. Ask how the teas are flavored before ordering.

* Choosing low carb. Unless you are on a low carb diet, the low carb menu should be avoided at all costs. Losing weight by counting calories is about just that, counting calories. Low carb options will contain fewer carbs but more fat and calories than many other options on the menu.

* Soups. Soups are another no-no in many restaurants. This is especially true for creamed soups. If soup is a must, ask for the nutritional data on the soup before ordering. Then, choose the soup with the lowest calorie count. And, always remember, you do not have to finish the entire bowl.

Losing weight and eating in a restaurant can be accomplished easily and without starving for that burger next to you. If the meal out is a planned one, eating a snack high in fiber before heading off to the restaurant is the best choice. The fiber will keep you feeling full and you will be less likely to order that huge meal sure to bump you off the weight loss track.

Keeping your back flat and your stomach muscles tight, bring your right leg up to the ceiling. Use your foot to 'draw' small circles on the ceiling, moving only your leg, not your hips or spine. As you get better draw larger circles. Repeat in the other direction and switch legs.

Raise your body up off the ground so that you are holding your back straight and looking straight ahead. Your weight is evenly distributed between your knees and your forearms. Contract your stomach muscles and Hold for 15-20 seconds. For more of a challenge, straighten your legs and hold your body off the floor from your toes and forearms. Remember to keep your stomach tight for the entire exercise and breath This move is similar to doing crunches. Lie on the floor on your back. Bring your feet in, so that your knees are bent at 90% with your feet on the floor. Bring your hands to your thighs with your arms straight. Pull your abs in tightly, holding your belly button to your spine and lift head and shoulders of the ground. Keeping your back on the floor, press your hands up and down,

Scissors. This is a great exercise to reduce stomach fat without doing sit ups. Lie on the floor on your back, prop yourself on your elbows with your arms bent at 90 degrees. Have your legs straight. Contract your stomach muscles, pulling your belly button to your spine and bring one leg straight up so that it is about 1 foot from the floor. Quickly alternate legs, breathing with each change. Repeat for 20 seconds, do not rush this exercise, take it slowly and be mindful of breathing and keeping your stomach muscles tight.

Basically, there are four common skin types: oily, dry, combination, and normal. The way your skin reacts and behaves classifies the type of skin you have. Skin types react in different ways to creams and/or lotions, environment, and weather. The skin on your face is the great point to categorize type of your skin.

Here are four skin types that you should know:

1. Oily Skin
Skin may look oily, sallow, and coarse; it has large pores and tends to have pimples, blackheads and whiteheads. The texture of skin is thick; the touch is often sticky. It is usually youthful-looking due to the presence of oil on the skin. Besides that, within hours of cleansing the oiliness will reappear and makeup is usually absorbed quickly. Sensé™ Self-preserving Technology is a Skin-care Industry Breakthrough

USANA received an official patent(U.S. Patent No. 7,214,391) on May 8 from the United States Patent and Trademark Office that guarantees proprietary rights to the self-preserving technology used in Sensé skin- and personal-care products.

USANA opened its new office in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia in early 2007.

We Need Supplementation

Sad Day

On Sundays, as usual, I would get up in the morning and head off to the pool for competitive swimming lessons. What we do at the pool is not the usual swimming lesson where you learn and practise the strokes. We swim laps, and we swim to beat the clock. 1st lap maybe on 2 minutes for 50 metres, 2nd lap 3 minutes, rest 20 seconds, 3rd lap 2 minutes and 4th lap as fast as one can go. Coach can be a sadomasochist at times, by increasing the laps and adding more sessions.

Arrived at the pool. There's a notice at the gate. "Coach is in hospital, lesson cancelled." What!!?? What happened? Made some phone calls and managed to get hold of coach's assistant. "Coach had a stroke." he said. How can that be? My coach is not the regular yelling, shouting, blowing whistle type at the sideline, he is a competitive swimmer himself.

According to the doctor, coach had a vein rupture on top right of his brain. This happens when the blood vessel is weakened. Surgery was done on him to stop the bleeding and also to withdraw blood that has bleed into the surrounding brain.

I don't enjoy being at the hospital, neither while visiting nor checking into one myself. The sad faces of patients or visitors. The fast moving staff, either they are really busy or they are avoiding any contact. The smell. The siren.

How can one be healthy? One who lives to a graceful age and able to enjoy good living? Something for me to ponder, research and learn.
